From pandemic gratitude to everyday discipleship — using posts, prayers, and purpose to reflect the light of Christ online.
I witnessed a powerful moment in social media during the COVID-19 pandemic, which began in 2019. According to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter- Day Saints, overall membership commitment remained strong during this time. A high percentage of members continued attending services — virtually or in spirit. Our community ties as Latter-day Saints, strengthened by social networks and support systems, became even more meaningful. Despite the challenges, the missionary program remained active.
I remember seeing videos of missionaries sharing inspiring messages from their apartments, bearing testimony, and spreading the love of Jesus Christ in creative and personal ways.
One of the most beautiful trends I saw during that time was the “Give Thanks” challenge on social media. For a full week — or even longer — members and friends of the Church around the world posted daily about what they were thankful for. It was such a small and simple act, yet it reflected the counsel found in 1 Thessalonians 5:18: “In every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you.” People used Instagram and Facebook not to complain, but to testify. I joined in too — sharing smiles, scriptures, temple photos, and little moments of grace that reminded me God was still near. That experience taught me that in times of great affliction — like a pandemic without a cure — faith can grow stronger. People turned to Christ. And I realized that I had a role to play, too. With every post, I strive to reflect what it means to be a true disciple of Jesus Christ. By living His commandments and sharing uplifting content, I try to show others that following Him brings peace. Whether it’s through quotes, gratitude, or testimony, I believe social media can be a tool for light — and I want to be part of that light.
